All the health data we generate throughout our lives is immensely valuable to academics, researchers and doctors. But there’s a core problem: Data silos isolate this health data, making it inaccessible.

With Summa, researchers and clinicians can collect survey and health data directly from study participants and patients. Our mission is to make sharing simple by bringing people and data together.


1. How Does Summa Work?

Researchers and clinicians, “Data Consumers”, use the Summa System to collect survey and health-related data directly from study participants and patients, “Data Generators”.

To access the Summa System, Data Consumers log in via the Summa Web App (found at https://www.WeAreSumma.com/). Data Consumers use the web app to create ‘Projects’. Projects support surveys, custom survey scheduling, and wearables data tracking including steps, heart rate, sleep and more!

When a Project is ready, Data Consumers distribute a Project-specific code to their study participants or patients. The Data Generators enroll in the project by downloading the Summa Mobile App and entering the Project-specific code. Once enrolled, Data Generators consent to sharing the requested health data and respond to surveys directly on their phone.

2. Vetting Data Consumers.

Summa vets all Data Consumers prior to giving them access to the Summa System. Data Consumers must sign a Memorandum of Understanding that stipulates, among other things, that the Data Consumer is (1) affiliated with an accredited academic institution, health system, or other recognized organization, (2) has organizational approval & authority to enter into agreement with 3rd parties, (3) is compliant with the organizations Institutional Review Board and other relevant department policy (such as a Security or Privacy office) when using the Summa System, (4) is compliant with existing local, state, and federal laws regarding data management, security, and privacy.

Make sure you are comfortable with all Project terms prior to enrolling and participating. You have the right to request additional information from the principal investigator and/or their organizations Institutional Review Board regarding the Project prior to enrolling and while participating.

3. Apple Health

This application integrates with Apple Health. This integration allows users to share select data collected by Apple Health.
